Dear Ask Ms. Click,
I want to purchase a potrack but I'm not sure what size to buy. I have a center island in my kitchen with a granite top that is five feet long by three feet wide. My ceiling over the island is nine feet high. Can you help me?

Pamela D
Oakland, California

Dear Pamela,
A potrack should hang at a height that makes it comfortable for you to reach the pots. That requires some help. Stand at the island reach up and have someone take a measurement. Your hand height, with your fist closed as you reach comfortably up, is exactly where the hooks on the potrack should end. Pamela, the rule of thumb for potrack length is 2/3 the length of the island. In your situation it should be approximately 40 inches long.

Dear Ask Ms. Click,
My husband and I are finishing building our dream home. I want everything to be just perfect!! I have selected some of your lighting fixtures. I chose your French Elegance chandelier for the dining room and I chose the Regency Lantern for the entry foyer. We have high ceilings in both areas and I am truly concerned about what height to hang my fixtures. I have a large window over my double entryway doors. What do you recommend?

Stephanie Tannis
Greensboro, North Carolina

Dear Stephanie,
Oh, what wonderful selections you've made for your dream home. The French Elegance is one of my personal favorites and it coordinates so well with the Regency Lantern. Do let me know the finish you select. I may have some additional ideas for you.

Your dining room chandelier should be hung so that the bottom of the light is between 30 to 36 inches over the table. For high ceiling applications, consider hanging your chandelier closer to the 36 inches. It generally will balance better in the space. But Stephanie, remember, it's what looks good to you that matters most.

For an entry foyer, I usually recommend that the bottom of the fixture be no lower than 7 feet six inches. However, because you have a window over your door, hang the light so that it can be seen through the window. Just think how lovely it will be to have lights twinkling in your foyer as you drive up to your new home.
